PROCESS
The Designprocess started with us creating a joint mood board to get a feel of what inspired us at that moment. After sharing works that inspired us and a detour discussing unorthodox ways on how to create and divide space, we landed on a shared love for the essential geometric shapes. Here especially the circle as it has no end nor beginning.
Following some initial sketching, we transitioned to making small-scale models to better grasp how the shapes would interact and be perceived by the user. After some back and forth, we discovered that layering three moving sheets could create exiting possibilities especially combined with vibrant colors. Furthermore, it would provide a clear difference between the open and closed states of the divider.
After reviewing our initial concepts, we decided to only focus on the circles since they created the most exiting effects in the compositions. Considering the intended space in which the dividers should be placed, we opted to reduce their height. We tested different heights in our design studio and landed on a height that creates shelter when sitting down at a table and maintaining the feeling of openness when standing.
Initially, we wanted the circles to move from open to closed position by a sliding mechanism connected to a base. This proved to be too difficult to create in our time schedule and also creating issues with weight and storage of the divider.
Instead, we pivoted to put the circles on aluminum poles connected to grand spruce bases. With this decision each of the three circles can stand alone and work as a divider. But when put together they surpass what they can be separated.
Reflecting on this project, I gained valuable experience in teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration. One of the main challenges for this project was landing a final concept.
Given the broad scope of the task and our different backgrounds, we spent a lot of time exchanging and comparing ideas and methods from our respective fields.
In hindsight,I think we probably got a bit carried away with this phase of the project.Leaving us with slightly less time than optimal in the workshop stage.
Nevertheless, I believe this project highlights the value of working with different creative disciplines. By joining ideas and methodologies from architecture and design, we were able to make a product that we both take great pride in and are genuinely enthusiastic about.
